I have this same kit, which being lefty operated left me less than thrilled with the process. BUT, that lens adapted to mirrorless is lovely indeed. As for “camera doesn’t matter”, I sort of agree. The photographer does need to connect to their camera kit as mush as folks need to connect to a photo. It’s why I enjoy vintage lenses because of the tactile experience, which then encourages me to make better photos.

Ya know, the only objection I have to YouTUbe reviewers, Kenneth, is when they 1. don't take the time to get even the most basic information correct (i.e. launch date July 2008, not 2010 or 2012) - a simple "google search" prior to uploading a video would reveal this and 2. failing to point out any of the potential downside (i.e. servicing the camera for parts). Other than getting a potential bargain (I own the D700 - and purchased it used), this really a compelling case (i.e.no photos or case use). Every camera has strengths and weaknesses - I didn't really see any evidence of either here. Point is, I'd love to hear something new about the D700 (i.e. revisited) and I believe Martin Castein did such a review with photos last year. Glad your mother's advice paid off, but this seemed to be more a video about shopping for bargains that the D700 per se.

This isn't a review site, in this case it was about how I find things in the current day that are good to still use. That was the point of this. Not about anything else. Sorry it wasn't what you were looking for.

Got mine with a beat up body. All rubber grips need to be replaced and the battery door is broken off. However, it still works and the images they produce are phenomenal. I took portraits for my family with the D700 and the 135 F2 DC and the images are amazing.

Try photographing a football game with a phone. Try making a head-and-shoulders portrait with a wide angle lens. Try making a macro photo of a bee with a 600mm f4 lens. No, the best camera is the one you had the forethought to bring with you because of your knowledge of what you might need. You're talking about the consolation of, "Oh, well, it's better than nothing." I don't have an interest in "good enough." Here's a better axiom: The prepared photographer is the best photographer to have with you.

Thanks Kenneth. As always, a great video. The Exakta Varex VX is really my favorite camera. It is beautiful, isn't it. That film cutter works especially well because you can pull out the take up spool and replace with an empty film cartridge so you don't have to worry when you open the back of the camera. When I was in high school, I had an Exakta Varex IIb and was on the yearbook staff for a few years. I would take some photos, cut the film, take out the film cartridge and run to the darkroom. Lots of fun and I didn't have to wait until the film roll was complete. You didn't mention that the Exakta was really versatile. You could exchange the finder prism for a waist level finder like a TLR. You could also change the focusing screen from the ground glass, which I like, to a split image or microprism. But the real heart of the Exakta was the incredible shutter speed range from 1/1000 to a full 12 seconds. For a camera designed in 1936 that was quite an achievement!

Just recently acquired an R8 and am now waiting for some film to be developed and scans sent my way. I hesitated with this purchase because of all the talk about the "hunchback" but upon receiving it and shooting it I find the size not bad at all and both in feel and actual dimensions smaller than my F4. You don't hear anyone talking about an F4 being too big. I'll put the Canon T-90 in there too. All fairly heavy, but as you said I find the heft reassuring that I have my hands on a solid piece of pro gear. Anyone calling this too big is likely comparing it to the other R series bodies and maybe even the rangefinders. I have never been a fan of dials on the left side on the body, especially for turning the camera off and on. But the way Leica did it on the R8 is the easiest I have ever used. It is quickly becoming second nature for me to flip the camera on since it just falls so naturally to my left thumb. The viewfinder, when combined with Summicron glass is probably the best manual focus viewfinder experience I have ever had. Better than the R7, I think. The film advance is one of the smoothest and easiest to operate, second only to the Nikon F3 in my experience. Wish I had gotten a deal like you did, but at least I got a refurbished unit which looks like new. Looking forward to shooting a lot more with it.

I've been watching your videos for a long while. Love your approach to 'all things photography'. We share a lot of common thoughts. I've actually started doing more portrait photography in the last couple of years. Specifically, random street stuff around my neighborhood with my R.B. Graflex SLR. It's not hard when you are standing there with a giant 100+ year old camera! They come to me, which initially helped me be a little less uptight. When I meet back up with them, I'll show them the digi-file on my phone first. Then, I hand them an 8x10. I love seeing their reaction to that print. It's amazing just how knocked over someone is when you hand them one. My reaction is always that way too when I see a print. It's special and it's nice to share that with people. Keep up the good work! ~Michael

I love my FM3a. Love love love it. However i was lucky to get a mint FG for under $20 with the E lens. I was surprised to see the shutter was still accurate. I had a terrible experience with an AE-1 Canon. Though i love my FM3a with a SB-800, the FG was always with me.
